In fish farming, there are two different farming methods. These are monoculture and polyculture fish farming. In this article, I will look over all the basics that get involved in monoculture fish farming.

Monoculture In Aquaculture

When only one fish species gets farmed in a single pond or tank, it gets referred to as a monoculture farming method.

Many farmers prefer to focus on single fish species. Concentrating on the high-demand fish in the market allows the farmer to maximize profit by focusing on only a specific fish species.

Only focusing on a single fish species type allows the farmer to observe and maximize the breeding performance of that fish species.

Monoculture System(Categories) of Fish Farming

  • 1) Freshwater culture
  • 2) Marine water culture
  • 3) Brackish water culture (salty water fish)

Monoculture Cultivable Fish Specie Qualities

  • One of the primary qualities farmers look for is the growth rate of the fish.
  • Fish that can feed on both natural and inexpensive artificial foods are strongly preferred.
  • Strong and resistant to multiple forms of different diseases.
  • Fish that only require relatively small amounts of food for their development of growth.
  • Can collect a medium to high price when the fish get sold.
  • Have the ability to reproduce when under confined living conditions.
  • The fish need to be easy to get harvested.
  • Can support high population density in their confined area.
  • Fish that are gentle and non-poisonous are generally used.

Common Monoculture Fish Types

Here is a list of the common types of fish that get most used in monoculture fish farming.

  • 1) Trout
  • 2) Tilapia
  • 3) Catfish
  • 4) Carps

What are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Monoculture Fish Farming

Advantages of Monoculture Fish Farming

What Are The Pros of Monoculture Fish Farming
  • 1. Easy to feed fishes.
  • 2. Permits great control over size, age, and sex.
  • 3. Maximum fish production is possible in an intensive monoculture. Conditions only need to be provided for one specific fish making it significantly easier to provide optimal conditions.
  • 4. Higher profits from fish farming are much more likely.
  • 5. Easy to monitor.
  • 6. Selective harvest of marketable fish can be employed.
  • 7. Suitable for farmers who only have a limited amount of land resources.

Disadvantages of Monoculture Farming

What Are The Cons of Monoculture Fish Farming
  • 1. Natural productivity of the pond does not get fully utilized.
  • 2. Available space/ ecological niches in the water column do not get fully utilized.
  • 3. In the case of disease outbreaks, there is a higher chance of losing yield to the farmer.
  • 4. Cannibalism may also be possible among fish.
  • 5. More risk of regression in water quality like dissolved oxygen depletion.
  • 6. Due to the dependence of fish species on natural food, as in typical carp fry, fish growth is affected by the shortage of natural food.

Summary

While monoculture fish farming has many pros and cons associated with it, it is still heavily used.

Many people are also starting to move out and use more polyculture farming methods.

Many farmers still prefer to use monocultures since they will usually generate the highest profit margins possible. It is also easier for the farmer to provide optimal conditions for the growth of the fish.
